The Historical Jewish Synagogue near hotel Arizona
Next to the Hotel Arizona is located the Florence Synagogue, (Jewish Temple). Its mountain green dome is
a famous spot in the panorama of Florence. Built in 1874
according to the plans of architects Marco Treves, Mariano Falcini,
and Vincenzo Micheli, it cost more than one million lire. It is the
meeting point of the Jewish community in Florence, which, even if not
too large (almost 2,000 people), is very ancient and dates back to the
Roman Empire. In the garden in front of the Synagogue, there is a large
plaque with the names of the 248 Jews who lived in Florence and were
killed by the Nazi. A similar commemorative tablet is on display at
Santa Maria Novella Station, on the line from where the train with Jewish
prisoners left, bound for concentration camps.
